江永の女性文字・女書(Womens Script, or Nushu)

女書とは中国湖南省江永県に伝わる女性文字。最近『アジア遊学』で遠藤織枝先生の紹介に接して知った方も多いと思う。私はここいら（湖南あたり）の女性の地位に興味を持った過程で少し調べ始めたので、文献リストのみ載せておきます。ともかくは、遠藤織枝先生の素晴らしい女書専題ホームページ「女文字の世界へようこそ」があるので、そちらをご参照いただきたいが、ここでは以下のような点に着目したい。広西壮族自治区に近い江永県内外の若干の鎮に女性独自の文字が伝わる。彼等は女性の仕事＝女紅を行うが、そうした風習に近いと思われる。文字は縦長で、基本的には表音文字（遠藤織枝「中国女文字の魅力(3)女文字の実際」『アジア遊学』29, 2001 p.118 、上段１２行目「多くは純粋の表意文字」は「多くは純粋の表音文字」の誤りか）であり、部分的に表意文字も混じる。若干、漢字をもとにしたものも存在する。起源については、上江墟荊田村から皇帝に召された胡秀英なる女性が、宮中から嘆きの手紙を秘密裏におくるためこの文字を用いた、という伝説があるが、女紅を行いながら、強い女性同士の付き合いの中からうまれてきたものであろうというのが、遠藤氏の見解である。宋代以降のものであろうという説が強いようだ。ともかく、詳細は遠藤氏の論文を参照されたい。社会経済史的になんらかの知見を得ることがあったら、ご報告します。

Hiragana literature, the main Japanese script, was first invented by women in Heian era, then followed by male. But the old hiragana system is not the only women's script in the world. This nushu, or women's script, is script letters only for women in a part of Hunan province, China, that survived until recently. Most of them are ideograms, but some phonograms are included. Professor Endo Orie, the leading researcher in this field, says this women's custom came out of nuhong (women's red), or womens works, in several zhens in and out Chiangyong county. It is believed that the custom exsited after the Sung dynasty. She has also written a series of guidence in the magazine Asia-Yugaku from 2000 to 2001. It is entirely impossible to research this topic without reading Japanese, however, Prof. Endo's site is provided with English version too. Here is a bibliography relating nushu below.
(The third character of the title logo, "mi", means "mistery" in Japanese, not "fan" like in Chinese. And it is read "nazo", not "mi". Nushu is read "josho", anyway...)
